In later years, Sensei took a keen interest in refereeing due to his experience as a competitor and coach, leading to his eventual rise as Chief Referee for the JKA (Japan Karate Association) and is now a senior referee with JKA WF. He has trained with a long list of legendary Japanese instructors, including the late Sensei Enoeda, and for many years has returned to Tokyo annually to participate in a demanding, week-long Gasshuku (Senior Instructors Course). Sensei started his karate training back in 1972 and quickly realized his desire to follow its path. He has also taught Karate to students at the prestigious City of London School since 1984. Provisional Black Belt: (shodan-ho) “old school” trial black belt, basically meaning that you get your black belt but have to show over time that you have truly earned it.8th – 4th kyu: some order of blue, green, purple and sometimes red, and sometimes with two kyu’s per color.No grade: white belt, though some schools use white as 10th kyu.Achieving 1st dan is the beginning of the journey, hence why kyus count down and then dans count up.
